How to Clean Your Imitation Jewellery at Home: 5 Simple Tips

Imitation or gold-plated jewellery is a favorite for many due to its stunning designs and affordability. However, unlike real gold, these pieces require extra care to maintain their luster. If not cleaned properly, they can lose their shine or tarnish over time.

To keep your collection looking brand new, follow these easy steps to clean your imitation jewellery at home.

1. Use Mild Soap and Warm Water

The safest way to clean most fashion jewellery is with a mixture of lukewarm water and a few drops of mild liquid soap or baby shampoo.

  • The Method: Soak your jewellery for 5-10 minutes. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently scrub away any accumulated dirt or oils, especially in intricate designs. Rinse with plain water.

2. The Power of Lemon and Baking Soda

For pieces that have developed stubborn stains, a paste of lemon juice and baking soda works wonders.

  • The Method: Apply a small amount of the mixture to the tarnished areas and let it sit for a minute before gently rubbing it off. Note: Avoid this method on jewellery with delicate stones or pearls as the acidity might damage them.

3. Dry Thoroughly Before Storing

Moisture is the biggest enemy of gold-plated jewellery. After cleaning, ensure every piece is completely dry.

  • The Method: Use a soft cotton cloth or a microfibre towel to pat the jewellery dry. Never store them while they are still damp, as this can lead to oxidation and green spots.

4. Apply Perfumes and Lotions First

Chemicals found in perfumes, hairsprays, and body lotions can react with the metal plating and cause it to fade.

  • The Rule: Always follow the “Last On, First Off” rule. Put your jewellery on last after your makeup and perfume have dried, and take it off first when you get home.

5. Store in Airtight Containers

Exposure to air and humidity accelerates tarnishing.

  • The Method: Store your jewellery in individual zip-lock bags or airtight containers. This prevents the pieces from rubbing against each other (avoiding scratches) and keeps them away from moisture.
